Defining Moments - Miracle's Solo Rampage

When Liquid was at ESL One Birmingham, one of the toughest tournaments of the year, Liquid.Miracle- did something that truly put him in a league of his own. Miracle- became the first player in professional Dota 2 history to achieve an entirely Solo Rampage.
But before we dive into the details, take a look for yourself.
Now, let’s take a close look at the lead up to this and how Miracle- manufactured the perfect fight against Forward Gaming. Here’s what the minimap looks like when Miracle first picks up the Double Damage rune.

Right now Liquid are far ahead in net worth, but can’t convert that into a win yet. In their way are the enemy Sniper and Pudge, who make sieging the enemy high ground exceptionally difficult. Attempting to push 5v5 in this position could be disastrous for Liquid as a lost fight could easily swing the momentum in Forward’s favor. From here, Liquid could easily move as five to take the top tower and shrine, then continue farming and building their lead until Forward made a mistake. However, Liquid aren’t the kind of team to win later. They want to win now. They aren’t going to sit back and let you make a mistake on your own, they’re going to pressure you and force you to make a mistake. So, how do they do that? The following image show’s Liquid’s movements, giving a hint to their plans.

Liquid split up so that Miracle can get a pickoff while the rest of the team is pushing the top lane. This pickoff is huge because it would allow Liquid to push high ground 5v4, sealing their victory. With multiple heroes showing in the top lane, Forward wouldn’t expect Liquid’s top net worth hero to be running around their jungle alone. This lulls Forward into a false sense of security, leading them to believe that they can safely leave their base to farm while Liquid sets up to push top. Miracle is prepared for this and moves toward the box shown on the minimap (the perfect place to play thanks to their full vision of the area). Liquid’s plan works and Miracle- gets an easy kill on the pudge. Now, this moment is what separates a great player from the Greatest of All Time player. Rather than be content with his pickoff and leave, Miracle- sees the entire enemy team and chooses to push forward and go for more.
They say that a smart player will always know their limits. Well, this time Miracle had none. Rather than use his BKB and take out the two supports in front of him, he waits until Earth Spirit commits his roll and blinks past the trees to drop Sanity’s Eclipse on Sniper. Normally, going into this fight would be very scary for Miracle- because a Sniper with BKB is exceptionally strong against OD. Unfortunately for Forward, CCNC never got the chance to use his BKB, because Miracle- killed him from the fog of war. Notice something missing here? Everyone is looking where OD was, not where he is. Poor Sniper is the only person to even see the Sanity’s Eclipse, but even he doesn’t find the OD until he is already dead. With Sniper out of the fight, the greatest threat to OD is gone. Miracle- pops his BKB and cleans up the Jakiro with ease before moving on to the Earth Spirit and Troll Warlord. The last phase of this fight shows Miracle’s excellent timing and health management skills as he kept the Troll Warlord at bay and avoided killing himself on the Earth Spirit’s Blademail at the same time. Had he hit the Earth Spirit just one more time during Blademail, he would have killed himself. Instead, he dealt just enough damage to kill the Earth Spirit mid-stun while controlling the Troll Warlord with Astral Imprisonment and Scythe of Vyse.
It’s truly amazing that we can continue to see new things after so many years of great Dota, but with astonishing players like Miracle-, it’s bound to happen. Make sure to catch Miracle- and the rest of Liquid at The International!
