Our Brazilian fans have impressed us with their fervor in both CS:GO and Rainbow 6: Siege, and it was only a matter of time until we found a player that could represent us in League of Legends. We’re excited to welcome Rafael "Rakin" Knittel as part of our Academy structure. He has the pedigree and the experience to contribute to the growth of his fellow Academy & LCS players so we can't wait to get started.
The Vladimir main from the Brazilian plains has quite a following — over 520k followers on Twitch and 487k on YouTube. Aside from his impressive physique, Rakin combines high level play and a likeable personality through his stream and gameplay-centric channel. As a former CB LOL player and starting mid laner, he has the pedigree and the experience to contribute to the growth of his fellow Academy players.
Rakin attended All-Stars in Las Vegas this past weekend, and some fans may have seen him in a brand new jersey. Make sure to congratulate Rakin on his move to Team Liquid with our Brazilian chant #EuSouLiquid!
Interview With a Vampire Blood Mage
How does it feel to join Team Liquid as a streamer and Academy sub?
Joining Team Liquid as a sub and streamer is a great honor for me. I believe that becoming somewhat of a bridge for both NA and BR communities to learn from each other is amazing. I am looking forward to learn from both the LCS and Academy team whenever it’s possible.
What drew you to Liquid?
I’ve always dreamed about participating in the esports scene outside of Brazil, and since I started playing League 6 years ago I’ve always admired Team Liquid. Funny enough, about 3 years ago I did a tryout to play mid for Liquid’s LCS team and failed, and now I have the opportunity to be a part of this.
Team Liquid’s CSGO and Rainbow 6 teams are very popular in Brazil. Did that influence your decision to join Liquid? Have you ever played CS:GO or R6, or know any of our players?
That definitely had an impact on my decision due to the fact that there was already a contact with the Brazilian community. I sometimes tune in to watch R6 and recently saw an amazing showing from Liquid’s R6 roster, and I’ve always been a big fan of TACO, so it will be great being in the same organization as him.
You played in CB LoL for a long time. Do you think the region has grown competitively over the years? How?
I honestly believe the Brazilian region has evolved quite a bit, but the other regions have evolved much more. We have improved our knowledge of general macro and a lot of new talent has contributed in the improvement of our competitive scene, but there’s still a lot to improve to get to a level close to the major regions.
Brazil has become a major powerhouse in some games, most notably in CS:GO. What do you think it will take for Brazil’s League of Legends scene to reach the same status?
In my honest opinion we would have to learn a lot from other regions. The major CS:GO teams in Brazil tend to branch out and live in other regions to improve, so having a way to gain knowledge to apply towards our League scene through direct contact with other regions would be an amazing start.
Our Brazilian fans are some of our most passionate. What is it that sets the Brazilian esports fan base apart from other regions?
The Brazilian fans that cheer for esports in general seem to have inherited the same passion we have for soccer. There is a lot of passion and emotions involved: a large amount of joy from a victory, and a lot of sadness and sometimes anger from defeat. This large amount of passion and emotion is what sets the Brazilian fan base as one of the most vocal and participative communities in esports.
You’ve developed a sizable following on Twitch and YouTube. What do you think are the most important traits you possess that have enabled you to be successful on both platforms?
I believe that my content tends to engage a lot with my audience and make a very “friendly laid-back” atmosphere. This makes it very easy to learn and just have a good time with my content, and I always want my chat and viewers to think of me as a close friend or even family.
As a streamer, how do you think Brazilian streaming culture differs from NA streaming culture?
Most of the Brazilian content features a lot of emotion, as in loud bursts of laughter and screaming quite a bit. I believe the NA streaming community is a bit more contained and has a different sense of humor and “memes” in general. Overall these are the only notable differences to be honest.
Is there anything you’d want to say to any possible new NA fans interested in watching your stream? Are there any inside jokes, memes, etc. they should know before tuning in?
All I can say is I’m VERY expressive and tend to talk a lot throughout my stream either responding my chat or discussing about the game. Expect a lot of Vladimir and Azir as well and POSSIBLY a few screams every now and then (I’m sorry I legit can’t control myself sometimes).
You’ll be attending All-Stars this weekend. Have you been to the event before? Do you have any interesting predictions for the event?
I’ve never been to All-Stars before (or any international event where I’m participating) but having the opportunity to be here is amazing and I can’t seem to stop smiling since my airplane landed. The one thing I know for sure is that there will be a lot of crazy picks (and counter picks) for the 1v1 tournament due to the new runes.
How are you liking Team Liquid 2019? Do you have any predictions for how the team will perform this year?
After I saw all the lineup announcements I am almost sure that Team Liquid’s roster is very capable of winning Worlds. It’s overflowing with undeniable talent and a clear drive to win, so I expect them to perform great not only nationally but on an international level as well.
Do you have any final words for your fans, old and new?
Thank you to everyone that has followed me throughout all these different moments of my League career, and I really hope to get to know a lot of new people from different regions as well whenever I do an English stream. I love the global League community and the different type of engagement and participation that each culture brings, so feel free to hit me up whenever I’m streaming and talk to me!

Como é para você entrar para a Team Liquid como um streamer e reserva do time Academy?
Entrar para a Team Liquid como um reserva e streamer é uma grande honra para mim. Eu acredito que, me tornar um ponte que possibilita que as comunidades do Brasil e da América do Norte aprendam umas com as outras, é incrível. Estou pronto para aprender tanto do time da LCS quanto do time Academy sempre que possível.
O que te trouxe à Liquid?
Eu sempre sonhei em participar do cenário de esportes eletrônicos fora do Brasil, e desde que eu comecei a jogar League a 6 anos atrás, eu sempre admirei a Team Liquid. Fato curioso é que, a mais ou menos 3 anos atrás, eu fiz tryout para ser o meio do time da LCS da Liquid e falhei, e agora eu tenho a oportunidade de fazer parte disso.
Os times de CS:GO e Rainbow 6: Siege da Team Liquid são muito populares no Brasil. Isso influenciou sua decisão de entrar na Liquid? Já jogou CS:GO ou R6, ou talvez conheça algum de nossos jogadores?
Isso definitivamente impactou na minha decisão devido ao fato de que já existia um vínculo forte entre a Liquid e a comunidade brasileira. Eu às vezes ia assistir aos jogos de R6 e recentemente vi uma performance incrível da equipe de R6 da Liquid, e eu sempre fui um grande fã do TACO, então será ótimo estar na mesma organização que ele.
Você jogou no CBLoL por um longo período. Acha que a região tem crescido competitivamente ao longo dos anos? Como?
Eu honestamente acredito que a região brasileira tem evoluído um pouco, mas que as outras regiões se desenvolveram muito mais. Nós temos melhorado nosso conhecimento de macro geral, e muitos novos talentos têm contribuído na melhoria do nosso cenário competitivo, mas ainda precisamos evoluir bastante para chegar próximo do nível das grandes regiões.
O Brasil tem se tornado uma potência em diversos jogos, mais notavelmente no CS:GO. O que você acha que o cenário de League of Legends brasileiro precisa para alcançar o mesmo status?
Em minha mais honesta opinião, nós deveríamos aprender muito mais com as outras regiões. Os maiores times de CS:GO do Brasil tendem a viver em outras regiões para melhorar, então, ter um meio de ganhar conhecimento para aplicar no nosso cenário de League of Legends diretamente já seria um ótimo começo.
Nossos fãs brasileiros estão entre os nossos mais apaixonados. O que tem no público do cenário brasileiro de esports que os separa das outras regiões?
Os fãs brasileiros que torcem por esports em geral parecem ter a mesma paixão que o povo brasileiro tem por futebol. Tem muito amor e emoções envolvidas: uma grande celebração quando somos vencedores, e muita tristeza e até raiva quando perdemos. Essa quantidade enorme de paixão e emoção é o que categoriza os fãs brasileiros entre os mais vocais e participativos do mundo dos esports.
Você garantiu grandes números na Twitch e no YouTube. Quais são as características que você acha mais importantes que você tem, e que permitiram você ser bem sucedido em ambas plataformas?
Eu acredito que o meu conteúdo tende a engajar com muitos da minha audiência, criando uma atmosfera bem “amigavelmente descontraída”. Assim fica fácil tanto de aprender quanto de se ter bons momentos com meu conteúdo, e eu sempre quero que meu chat e espectadores pensem em mim como um amigo próximo ou até mesmo parte da família.
Como um streamer, como você acha que a cultura de streaming brasileira se diferencia da cultura de streaming da América do Norte?
Muito do conteúdo brasileiro envolve muita emoção, dá pra ver pelas explosões de risada e gritarias. Eu acredito que na América do Norte a comunidade de streamers é um pouco mais contida e tem um senso de humor, e até “memes” diferentes no geral. Mas, como um todo, essas são as diferenças mais notáveis para ser honesto.
Tem algo que você gostaria de dizer para possíveis novos fãs da América do Norte que estariam interessados em assistir sua stream? Tem alguma piada interna, memes, etc. que eles deveriam saber antes de acessar?
Tudo o que eu posso dizer é que eu sou MUITO expressivo, e que falo bastante durante minha stream, tanto respondendo meu chat quanto falando sobre o jogo. Esperem bastante Vladimir e Azir também, e POSSIVELMENTE alguns gritos aqui ou ali (me desculpem, eu realmente não consigo me segurar algumas vezes).
Você estará participando do All-Stars nesse final de semana. Você já foi ao evento antes? Você tem alguma previsão interessante para o evento?
Eu nunca fui ao All-Stars antes (ou a algum evento internacional onde eu estava participando), mas ter a oportunidade de estar fazendo parte disso é ótimo e eu não consigo parar de sorrir desde que meu avião aterrissou. Uma coisa que eu sei é que com certeza terão diversas escolhas malucas de campeões (e contra-escolhas) para o torneio de 1v1, devido às novas runas.
Como você vê a Team Liquid em 2019? Você tem alguma previsão para como o time irá se sair ano que vem?
Depois que eu vi os anúncios do time eu tenho quase certeza que essa equipe é capaz de vencer o mundial. A equipe está transbordando de talentos inegáveis e estão claramente prontos para vencer, então eu espero que eles tragam ótimos resultados, não apenas nacionalmente, mas a nível internacional também.
Você tem alguma palavrinha final para seus fãs, tanto novos quanto antigos?
Obrigado a todos que me seguem em tantos momentos da minha carreira no League of Legends, e eu realmente espero conhecer diversas pessoas de diferentes regiões sempre que eu fizer transmissões em inglês. Eu amo a comunidade global de League of Legends e os diferentes tipos de engajamento e participação que cada cultura atrai, então, sintam-se livres para me dar um alô e trocar uma ideia sempre que eu fizer uma transmissão!
