Hbox, Du and Quake: Dominant in Denver

October 24 2017

Suffice to say this was a very dominant event for Team Liquid. Three of our four squads competing at the tournament nabbed titles in their respective games, with none of the winning teams dropping a single series. Smash, Street Fighter and Quake all produced champions, and Halo was not far behind with a silver medal.

In Smash, Hungrybox continued his winning ways by beating Mango twice to earn top honors. Hbox has now won the last 4 major tournaments, putting himself neck and neck with Armada as the game's best current player. ChuDat also performed well, beating M2K in Losers Round 5 before falling to S2J for the right to reach the final bracket.

Capcom Cup defending champion NuckleDu matched Hbox's exploits by cruising through the Street Fighter bracket. Du even managed to bring out a surprise Cammy, though it did put him on the ropes in the Winners Final against Pavodaco. Guile resurfaced and cleaned up the series, and the finals provided few surprises in a 3-1 victory.

This event also marked the official debut of our Quake roster, DaHanG and rapha, and they did not disappoint. While both players were stopped in the quarterfinals of Duel, the two Quake greats rallied in Sacrifice to sweep the tournament. From the qualifier till the title, DaHanG and rapha's squad showed that they are one of the best teams in the world by winning every single map. DaHanG and rapha are already invited to DreamHack Winter, and they will go up against more of the best teams in the world.

Finally, our Halo quartet fell just short of the title against OpTic Gaming. Back-to-back sweeps over arch-nemesis nV as well as Splyce seemed to give us the momentum, but OpTic's winners bracket inertia proved difficult to overcome. Fatigue might have played a role as we succumbed 1-4 in the title bout.

Without a doubt, Denver was a successful stop for Team Liquid and our various teams. It was an exciting weekend full of thrills, and we'd like to thank our fans for coming out and supporting us live and on stream.
