Lighting Up the Competition

May 02 2016
Every player has their own personality, and every game has its own needs. Customization is an important part of a pro's setup, and there is nothing quite like adaptable gear to bring out the best in our players. Our champions and challengers use Razer's peripherals, and one of their most vital tools is the keyboard.

With blistering APM, pros crush lesser boards beneath their fingertips. Only mechanical keys can stand the test of time and punishment, but that alone isn't good enough for the world's best players. Changeable keys do more than just personalize a player's deck; it provides a more visual representation of each key's function. With the BlackWidow X Chroma, a dazzling light show does everything for you.

With 16.8million colors, there's no end to how organized (or how pretty!) your keyboard can become. Need your WASD keys in a unique color? No problem. Need your army hotkeys color-coded? Easy. Want to spell your name on your board? Yeah, you could do that too.

Hiko's setup is particularly colorful:

Our players have their own ways of customizing their keyboards, and it's not all for style points. Below, some of our players discuss their own setups, the logic behind them, and what makes the BlackWidow special.

I'm using a blue and white layout to go with TeamLiquid's colors. My layout has two layers: A static blue and a reactive white light on each key-press. I keep the brightness on dim, in order to make sure it's not too bright at night and to always keep my focus on the monitor and StarCraft. The colors go really well next to my DeathAdder Chroma—also set to blue—and the Team Liquid themed Goliathus mousepad.

The mechanical green switches are my favorite switches of all time. They feel light to press and the sound is comfortable. My key-presses are extremely accurate now too, which is very important when casting spells or doing APM-intensive things in StarCraft. It's a consistently pleasant keyboard to use and the color options are a great touch.

I start with a static blue layout for Team Liquid pride! I only use a few effects because I like a simple and clean layout, but the plethora of options and effects to play around with is very engaging! It's a lot of fun to mess around with, and I definitely see myself changing my effects and settings periodically just for fun. Right now, I'm using the ripple setting with yellow/green, and the breathing effect for the function keys.

I'm currently using the tournament edition so I don't have a numberpad. I just like having multiple colors on my keyboard so it looks more appealing. As you can see from my layout, I just like having a colorful keyboard! Otherwise, the BlackWidow is the best mechanical keyboard I have ever had because of it's very handy with a good design.

I have my Blackwidow Chroma set to the wave color cycle. I have it set to wave because I like the way the lights illuminate across my desk next to my Razer Firefly. I enjoy how the colors cycle very fast. It kind of looks like a nonstop moving rainbow.

I really enjoy the comfort of the BlackWidow. I like the sound of the mechanical keys as well. Something about it makes it seem more enjoyable to type.

Do you use the same layouts as some of your favorite players? Are you making the switch to their recommended setups? We've all got our own preferences, and these are just a few of the infinite ways you could set up your own BlackWidow X Chroma.
