Team Liquid qualify for IEM San Jose

November 16 2015
This weekend’s iBUYPOWER Cup in Santa Ana, California pitted eight of the top teams currently residing in North America against each other for a prize pool of $100,000 and two qualifier slots at IEM San Jose next week.

Liquid CS:GO took this LAN by storm and swiftly propelled themselves to the finals with three straight victories. The group stage saw Liquid eeking out two razor-thin victories against compLexity (19-17) and Cloud9 (16-14), putting them firmly at the top of Group B and securing their spot in the bracket stage semi-finals. CLG would be the last obstacle for Liquid to climb before making it to the grand finals and booking their tickets for San Jose.

As one of North America’s most consistent top-level teams, CLG would be no small task, but adreN and the team were more than up to the challenge. The first map, Overpass, was fast and decisive—adreN, nitr0, and EliGE all fragging at 20 kills and over. CLG’s star player tarik was close to absent on Overpass and Liquid’s crisp play would allow them to take the first map 16-7. On Cobblestone, CLG put up much more of a fight but ultimately fell to nitr0 and Hiko both hitting their strides. At 33 and 28 frags respectively, these two stars brought a huge amount of impact to the game. After a back and forth battle, Liquid would close out the map at 16-12, continuing their perfect run through the iBUYPOWER Cup.

Looking forward to next weekend in San Jose, another $100,000 will be up for grabs, this time in Northern California. For this event, however, competition will not be restricted to North America—TSM, EnVyUs, Virtus.pro, Na`Vi, and Gamers2 will all be in attendance. Additionally, Luminosity and Cloud9, both of whom attended the iBUYPOWER Cup, will round out the tournament’s lineup alongside Liquid, who will be automatically placed in the quarter-finals against nV.

The competition in San Jose will be considerably tougher, but Liquid’s stellar LAN performance this weekend is certainly promising. Come cheer on the boys of Liquid next weekend, November 21-22, at the SAP Center in San Jose, California.
