Hungrybox & Nairo wins MLG World Finals

October 19 2015
MLG celebrated their 100th event, MLG World Finals 2015, in New Orleans from Oct 16-18, which featured Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Wii U. A $10,000 pot bonus for each game’s singles tournament was up for grabs, as this tournament had a smaller pool of pro players for each game.

In Melee, we had our very own Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma and Kashan “Chillindude” Khan” competing. Chillindude teamed up with Jeffrey “Axe” Williamson and took second place in doubles, losing to Jason “Mew2King” Zimmerman and Justin “Wizzrobe” Hallett. Hungrybox was able to make it to winners side of top 8, sweeping the tournament by beating Sami “DruggedFox” Muhanna 3-1, Axe 3-1, and Mew2King 3-1 in Grand Finals to take first.

In Wii U, we had a spectacular performance by Nairoby “Nairo” Quezada, especially with the larger pro pool than Melee. Losing in winner’s semifinals to Eric “ESAM” Lew, Nairo had to put up a fight in loser’s bracket by meeting ESAM in loser’s finals by picking Dr. Mario, a character not seen much in competitive play. Nairo, then, had to meet with Gonzalo “ZeRo” Barrios in Grand Finals. Nairo was able to reset the bracket 3-2 and continued on in the second set, winning 3-1 by using only Zero Suit Samus.

MLG World Finals 2015 was a strong showing by Team Liquid, with two of our players taking first in each event, especially with Nairo ending ZeRo’s 53-win tournament streak.
