Neirea to Blizzcon!

October 08 2015

Neirea takes second at the HWC EU Championship and is headed to the Hearthstone World Championships at Blizzcon. We sat down with him right after he got home to talk to him about the road to Blizzcon.

Hey Neirea, congrats for qualifying for Blizzcon! How do you feel?

I felt exhausted after win vs Pavel. It was my main goal going to Prague. Actually, it wasn't my main goal because initially I just tried to make myself concentrate fully on the game and just do as few mistakes as possible and then what happens that happens.

In that case you must be pretty happy making the finals, especially since you didn't make Blizzcon last year from the Regionals. What do you think changed this year? What was different?

Everything is different. It was a really big audience on Hearthstone stage. People are playing way better now. The different format was something and of course I prepared way better than last time. Last Regionals all my preparation took one day of practicing.

Your decks seem pretty standard at first glance with a lineup of Druid/Demon Handlock/Patron Warrior. With a closer look, however, we can see that there are quite a few tech cards. Which cards would you say are specific for this tournament and why did you decide to throw these cards in?

Most of tech decisions are made to have not bad matchups vs Patron and Handlock: it's almost impossible to counter Druid. I had a second BGH over Coil and Loatheb over Dr. Boom. Dr Boom is actually pretty bad in the mirror because Boom Bots allow Moltens earlier and it can be big trouble. Loatheb can also stop Druid combos and sometimes Patron.

My Druid list was the same list I used in the 40-man qualifier. I think it's close to perfect versus another Handlock/Patron/Druid lineups.

The Patron deck had one Shield Slam to have an almost even matchup vs Handlocks. Other versions are slightly better vs Druid only.

Most of the players in the EU qualifier brought Druid/Handlock/Patron again. Do you think there is a problem currently with the staleness of Hearthstone where players are just bringing the same exact decks over and over again?

The problem is Conquest format. If Patron gets nerfed there will still be similar problem. In conquest without bans you simply can't bring niche decks like Freeze Mage or Malylock because you can't counter decks like Druid or Patron to the ground. You have to bring three solid decks in order to win whole series.

This didn't seem to be the case before TGT where there was quite a large variety of decks. What do you think changed after TGT?

Right now you see mostly these boring lineups because of Druid. Druid is basically an uncounterable power deck that should be a part of this answer. Druid got stronger with addition of Darnassus Aspirant. Right now Druid has pretty good matchups even vs aggro decks that used to kill it. If you add Patron and Druid that are very well rounded decks, you just need to find third one and you have a very strong lineup.

Why Patron may not be the only problem.

In the EU tournament, Pavel made a grievous mistake that may have cost him a Blizzcon qualification. Did you get a chance to talk to him afterwards and how did he feel about it? Have you ever made such a mistake in an important game?

Of course he felt very bad after doing such a misplay. After the event I noticed even more that non-game factors matters as much as game factors: lights, noise, comfort, and state of your body. I think I've never done such huge mistakes because I would've remember it haha. I feel just as bad after doing smaller misplays and losing because of them.

Speaking of small misplays, you made quite a few small ones during your matches at the EU Regional finals, ones that you immediately noticed right after. Was the big stage a big factor in these misplays and what steps will you take to ensure they happen less frequently in the future?

It's just small factors that made me to pay less attention to the game; for example, in the first series vs Lifecoach, the lights were too bright so I should've changed my siting position to see how many cards he mulligans. I also can't exclude that we we were playing almost whole day and being tired is not helping you playing better of course.

Are you personally a fan of either the conquest or last hero standing formats? Or do you have an idea of something that's better than either of these?

I prefer last hero standing with one ban way more. I'm not sure if conquest with a ban would be better. I don't know about any more formats. The only one I know are viagame's nine-deck format, which is really good, but it's hard to implement it in every tournament. Different formats will be way different from ladder -- which is what blizzard tried to fix this year -- but for viewers in my opinion it's better that tournaments are different from ladder. If they want to see good decks for ladder they can just open regular streams and find them.

Looking at the list of players who've qualified for Blizzcon already, and the list of players who could qualify from the NA region, which region would you say have the highest skill players potentially going to Blizzcon?

I would say our region is pretty strong. Not sure how NA will do later in their championship. As for APAC and China I would say their strength can be deckbuilding: they can do some stuff that we don't expect, but by skill potential I would say EU and NA are favorites.

What about individual players?

I can't tell much because I didn't play vs any of those players and didn't see many tournaments with them.

Do you have a favorite/highlight moment from your Blizzcon Regional Championship?

I didn't really have any crazy moments in my games but I remember I was speaking aloud when I was counting potential lethal the turn before vs Pavel's Handlock as a Patron Warrior. After that turn after I got Frothing!

Or there was that time when Ostkaka didn't have a turn 8-9 play with Druid. It was pretty funny because he had so many cards in his hand.

Alright, that's all I have for you today I think. Do you have any final words?
